Report

Report:It’s official; Christmas has arrived early in Sutton as they ploughed into their first win of the season. The two previous games they drew 2 all, but unlike any other sport, draws don’t equal equal points. Last night there was no doubt about getting a third losing draw. Trounce would be unfair as NWB (Nuffield West ByFleet – not Nat West Bank) put in a spirited performance. The first game was a corker. Sutton’s Nick Search took a very close first game 10-9. NWB’s Steve Tune pegged the next one back at 10-8. They should have started the 3rd game at 8 all, as they both matched each other so tightly. When they did get to 8 all again, Nick took a risk and called set ‘one’. Steve served a ‘nick’ to Nick and the wall came tumbling down as Steve took the third 9-2. The number two’s stepped up and Phil Burton ran his socks off to bully Spencer Harris into many unforced errors. Amazingly Phil Burton has now been playing in the Surrey league for over 15 years and like a nice Merlot he is improving with age. The match was tied when Tim Cox, Sutton’s veteran, gunned into the court to meet NWB’s laid back number one Mark Richmond. In short Mark was hit by a steam train as Tim stole the first game 9-1, before Mark had even blinked. Mark tried to get up off the floor for the second game but was bull-dozed down 9-1 again. Now Mark is a skilled playing and had some beautiful touches and drops, but before he could decide which way to face Tim went through him like a frog in a liquidiser to take the final game 9-1. Mark might still be wandering around Sutton in a daze. On the other court Sutton’s Mike Connaghton had won his first game so statistically Sutton would win the match. With the pressure off, Mike relaxed and played a smooth and controlling game for his first win of the season. It was our best night yet (and the largest bar bill so far). However I think the next game will be our Boxing Day come down.
