Report

Report:Purley’s first match of Movember saw a massive crowd participate the evening’s fixture against Esporta. The supporters were waiting with baited breath for what was due to be an excellent evening of squash, and a few were keeping the tradition of growing their moustaches for charity for the month.
The first match of the evening was ‘Spinal Problem’ Wilde versus the ‘Golfing Legend’ Robbins. The match started off in typical fast fashion with Wilde playing a vast array of shots and Robbins counter attacking with some brilliant strokes. Wilde looked to be on top in the first game at 7-5 when he went to pick the ball up off the floor and he felt one of his discs pinch against his spine. After a slight delay, Wilde decided to carry on (a decision now given his current physical condition he regrets taking) however was unable to properly move for the remainder of the game and Robbins took it. In the second and third game Robbins was putting in some excellently crafted points but Wilde managed to pull through these two games and found himself at 2-1 in the match. However, Robbins had worked his magic (must be all of those hours he spends at The Bridge Bar in Beckenham trying his magic) and had managed to tire Wilde out and ended up winning 3-2.
Whilst this was underway the second match of the evening was taking place between ‘Toni & Guy Hair Promoter’ Baker and Michael Wood. After a reasonable tight first game the crowd were expecting a long match, however Wood’s technical ability was proving too much for Baker and he ended taking a comfortable 2-0 lead. More was to follow in the third and final game and after a few excellent boasts Wood won 3-0.
The third match of the evening was ‘Babyface’ London versus ‘The Legend’ Garner. There were two questions that were constantly being asked on the gallery whilst the two players were warming up and these were: “How old is Steven London?” and “Isn’t that the guy from the squash magazines?” However on court the two players were asking questions of each other’s games with Garner playing an excellent line and length game with some deft touches and London retrieving excellently playing some lovely backhand winners. After two tight first games, Garner was leading 2-0, however London came out like a man possessed in third and played a storming game and won it 12-10. The crowd thought a comeback was on however Garner’s vast experience proved too much for London and won 3-1.
The number one seed’s were the fourth match on for the evening which saw ‘Robert Pattinson’ Leitch versus ‘The Silver Fox’ Ford. After Leitch’s excellent effort at the Commonwealth Games representing Scotland he has returned to the country looking the splitting image of the Twighlight Saga’s Robert Pattinson. However, Ford as always looks like the chap out of the ‘Just for Men’ adverts at the start before he applies any product. The match got off at an electrifying pace which saw Leitch using his speed and Ford applying some deft touches. Leitch narrowly took the forst game but Ford was close on his heels and levelled the match at 1-1. The third game was extremely tight with Leitch putting in 110% as always to track down all of Ford’s shots, however this proved to be too much for Leitch and Ford took the game. The Scots man returned to the court in the fourth game like a man on a mission and chased down everything Ford had to offer and set up a breath taking final game. Ford used his experience and excellent racket work to the full in this last game and won 11-6. This was the match of the evening with both Ford and Leitch playing excellent squash, and they both seemed to love all of the attention they were receiving from the crowd.
The final match of the evening was ‘Tom Baker’ Olby versus Humberto Mosquita. Olby is starting to resemble the ex Time Lord Tom Baker more and more, and with the cold weather approaching one feels that he will soon be arriving at matches in a Tom Baker long scarf and a tardis. Anyway, this match was over before it really got started, with Olby taking no prisoners from the word go. Mosquita seemed to have no answers for anything on court and the match was won 3-0 in a short space of time.
I would just like to say thank you on behalf of all of the players for everyone who came to watch. It made the atmosphere of the evening really great and both sets of teams really appreciated everyone’s input from the balcony.
