Report

Report:A really close encounter played in good spirit with the the outcome going all the way to the 5th set of the deciding match.

1st on court were the #1's who played out an absolute thriller as the score would suggest. Tom gave the home fans loads of nervous moments as he regularly forged out into the lead only for Peter to peg him back but thankfully he managed to close out the 5th and most important set with a quality backhand volley drop much to the relief of the home support on the balcony!

Over on the other court Dave at #4 had made a fast start against Simon but once Simon get those limbs warmed up he is a quality player with an array of shots and Simon had too much quality on the night.

The #2's & #5's followed the opening 2 games on court and in the #2 match I was fortunate to come back in the 3rd set and close it out in 3 just when it looked like John was building some momentum. However on the court next door Garth was busy putting Ian to the sword. After losing the opening set Garth raised his game and was able to effectively move the big man around the court and force a number of errors out of Ian. Hence it was 2-2 headed into the decider.

The final match was youth (John) vs experience (Jim) and we were treated to a quality match to decide the outcome. Jim came out firing with an up tempo game which is rarely seen by Jim these days but in his own words "it was the 1st time he had been fully fit for many a month". John however responded brilliantly in the next 2 with some exceptional movement and good depth and it looked like it was going to be Ebbisham's night but alas Jim dug deep and changed his game plan to a patience game and he cut out the errors and waited for John to go for the killer shot. Long rallies ensued but it worked for Jim as he took the next 2 sets and with it the match for Ashtead.

Well played to Ebbisham and good luck for next season as it looks like you will be heading up a division. We enjoyed both our matches with you guys this season.
