Report: | Finally the Warlingham Woefuls came good with a much needed win. Why they had to wait until the last match of the season is a mystery that even Sherlock would struggle to solve, but there were some fine performances. Paul had a quick one set against John who had to retire with a bad back - which does not bode well for the future, with John being the youngest player on show. Wait till he gets to our age. Chris had his mind very definitely set on his plane to New York and with that performance there was no danger of him missing it. He made check in with hours to spare. Gary did his usual, lets run around quickly and play loads of mishits, game - and as per usual - it worked. Ray just rolled back the years with some delightful and delicate shots leaving Dave stranded time after time. The lob and drop routine was indeed in full flow. Ray's missed match ball in the third could have been costly, and we have all seen him lose from this position, but he squeezed through in a very tight 4th. This brought us to the outstanding match of the evening. One hour twenty minutes of full throttle squash between Rod and Dave. Just when Rod looked in control he would hit the ball straight back to himself, grunting and groaning furiously. In terms of points, the second game would have been 31-29 on American scoring which shows how close it was. After a quick 3rd Dave raced ahead to 6-1 up in the 4th and 7-3 in the 5th but point by point Rod pulled him back, dug deep, got even redder in the face, to run out a close winner in a very entertaining game full of good squash. A fitting end to the season against a decent bunch of chaps with a fair few bevvies afterwards, as our largest bar bill of the season will testify. |
