Report

Report:Well played to Preston Cross boys. The pivotal match turned out to be at the #4 strings where John fought manfully to take the match to 5 sets after straining/tearing a calf muscle in the 1st set and nearly managed to pull off victory. Fair dues though to Chris G. as we all know how hard it is to keep the focus against an 'injured' opponent as you never know which points they will simply concede and which ones they will suddenly chase down.

Well played to Marcus who was 1st on court against Neil and closed out a straight sets victory. Meanwhile on the court next door Chris B was playing some really good stuff against Tom and reversed the result from the #5 strings thereby levelling the match at 1-1 apiece.

The battle of the heavyweights (literally) then ensued with Ian winning the big points in sets 3 & 4 against Nick to once again put Ashtead back in front and things were looking good on the court next door with John looking comfortable at 8-2 in the 1st set when injury struck. He did well to close out the 1st set and some temporary strapping and a determined John went back out on court more in hope than expectation but surprised everyone by taking it all the way to the 5th. Cries from the Preston Cross boys on the balcony of "Keep it away from him Chris" seemed to fall on deaf ears in the 3rd set when John was clinical in taking his chances and for a brief moment Ashtead thought we may pull a rabbit out of the hat but it was a stretch too far and well done to Chris.

It was then left to the battle of the #1's to decide the tie. The less said about this match the better and it was very much a case of 2 men behaving badly and the only one to emerge with any credit from this match was Ian (the marker). In the end it was Jules who kept his composure more than I and after fighting back from 4-8 to win the 2nd he then romped home in the 3rd to close out the match and victory for Preston Cross.

Thankfully the interaction in the bar and over the meal was far more social and we can now all look forward to locking horns again in the 2nd half.
