Report

Report: A plucky Purley, spurred by our proper number one Tony Webb, came out fighting for this fixture.

Tony came riding in like the man with no name from a "Fist Full of Dollars". You could almost here the music as Dorking watched him roll by in silence past court 3. He did not disappoint.

Damn.... I wish I could play as good as him. James Norman was gutsy, energetic and very focused but the relentless reliability of Tony was quite awesome. He did not seem to hurry... he did not snatch.... or try anything cheap. He never stole a single point. He was not jammy in the slightest. He did'nt need to be.
Good tempered and giving credit where it was due. The man was SMOOTH.....
James fought for every point but eventually he creaked and then broke on the wheel of Tony's craft work.

After that, the hero music stopped and the rest of Dorking restored order in brutal fashion. Jack Martell, ( the England junior) put on his goggles like a sheet metal worker, and pulled our Tin Man (Paul T) through his mangle at No. 2. Both players parents watched the spectacular 16yr old cruelly dispatch Paul in 3. The kid was just too good. We tried to offer Paul advice, but frankly, he did nothing wrong. The rallies were just long and brutal. All we could offer on the balcony ... was sympathy and shrugs while Paul's parents hit the bar and drowned their sorrows.

I nearly got a game out of Mark Kubli. It was the 2nd game and I was 10/7 up. But when he realised I might pilfer a game he went into lock down denying me point after point. When I lost that game it felt like being stood up on a date - Flowers still in hand. Next time, I will face him with the determination of the spurned!

Gordon worryingly wore one long black sock (up to the knee) and a short white sock (just above the ankle). We all smiled at his sartorials, but when he took the first game from Adam, Dorking stopped smiling and got serious. Frequently, Gordon got to game points, but Adam was'nt having it. He fought like a cornered dog before chasing the cunning old fox off the court.

I think AndyCrispy will weep when he reflects on how he lost 3-Zip to Rob. At first, it seemed incredibly unlikely that Andy would get anything out of this game. Rob thundered the ball low and very hard - ALL the time. Andy, was forced to dance all over the court as Rob blasted the ball to all 4 corners. However, dance he did.... all the way toward the promised land of 'Game ball'.... When he arrived we all held our breath on the balcony, praying for him to land a killer blow and win a game. Alas, he did not land anything accept our shattered dreams.

It was a great match. Purley took a beating but it was one of the best feelings ever to have a big brother playing at number one, showing us how to do it.

Dorking were a smashing bunch to play and were good sports too. We did'nt have to warn any of them about rule 17.
