| Report: | A closely fought match brought an un-expected result last night. First on were the 3s, captains Steve & Toby renewing an old rivalry. On the adjoining court, our junior Katie took on the vastly experienced Matt, who played with style to win in straight games to give New Malden an early advantage. Toby & Steve were having a tough battle, which went to five games. It was very unfortunate that Steve twisted his ankle badly and had to retire at the start of the decider, as the match was entertaining and would have gone to the wire. Greg and Andy faced each other for the second time this season, and Greg put on his best display in the second half of the season to gain revenge for his defeat at New Malden in November by winning in five. By now, two other old foes, Paul & Floyd, were well into their long match on Court three, which could have gone the distance if Paul was fitter! Floyd worked him into the ground, and by the fourth game the wheels were well and truly off. So it was all on the final match, Anthony v Adam. Ant played a few 'Shanes' (mis-hit winners) in the first game to unsettle Adam, who looked edgy and was soon behind. Ant went on to play his best squash of the season, while Adam made too many un-forced errors as Ant won in straight games to seal a fine win for Purley.
New Malden were their usual sociable selves, we wish them well as they look to seal promotion up to Division Four next winter. |
