Report: | Dorking 1 vs Amida David Lloyd 1 Tuesday 24th August 2010
With the Sultan of Southwater taking up his singing career in the depths of Borneo and the absent roving reporter Simon away on fatherly duties, the final report needs to be told if only for massaging of my ego.
Amida stormed into town as the top team and it was going to be tough without our captain scarlet or winnalot at our beck and call. However out with the old and in with the younger and taller. First on was the Frankster. Having left any software details and concerns back at work, the mighty frank French demonstrated the art to an admiring audience how to Volley nick both forehand and backhand. I was taking note. It was an even contest for quite a while until I started noticing Frankie taking longish walks between points and bobbing his head side to side. His opponent (Damian Budding) having been put to a 5 set sword earlier in the year by the Sultan ended up taking a victory of us 3-0. It must be noted that there were no entertaining outburst from a former previous chump. Well behaved Frankie.
On the other court there was an up and coming 6”2 giant Pip Johnson, demonstrating some great retrievals. However lacking some final mental toughness Pip Johnston succumbed to his opponent Richard Grant 3-0. On all 3 of the games Pip was leading to at least 6 points. The Pipster is one to watch and will be a worthy number 1 or Lamb quite soonish.
It was now my turn. Having been brutally been handed the dirty pint of 12 points from the previous encounter with a very pleasant and charming Scottish Neil Dickson, it would need to be seen if he could do it again. With my first defeat of the season been spiced with the tipple of the dirty pint, I took the court. I lost the knock up and the first game 9-2. There was a talent on show and a demonstration of how to play squash using ball control placement and irretrievable nick shots stranding me nowhere near the ball. Neil took the second game 9-0. Thoughts of a spanking and the defeat of the aussies in the ashes ran through my mind. However, Neil started doing impressions of church’s creating steeples unlike some of the beautiful churches I have seen in England. I thought it was hardly the time and place for these impressions and sensed that the extra 10kg of energy he was carrying must be taking a toll. Mr Dickson was sprinting to and fro to the front and back of the court. His biscuit was spent and I took the next 3 games 9-2. 9-5, 9-3. A truly remarkable result from someone who cannot play a drop shot!
Dorking was now 2-1 down, Clayton played well and took the first game 10-9. However after his opponent Chris Fink regained his mental discipline a great match was over 3-1 with dorking going down 4-14 on the night. We await “stato” to give us the all clear for Div 2 next season. The sultans mission completed, he waits for tales of slaughtering but most of all lambing.
Big thanks to Vince, for running the team and the entertaining reports thru the season.
