Report

Report:Having seen the quality and depth (and dare I say experience!)of the Purley team as they entered the Ashtead establishment we were quaking in our boots.
Once we had exchanged our boots for some squash shoes we felt more relaxed and ready to take on anything Purley could throw at us with our full strength side in place too.
First up was our young pretender Dan (fresh from a few days rest during half term)playing at 3 against an experienced Paul E. I was marking the match on the next court so didn't see much of the game but the word "cruising" was heard across the balcony after Dan took a 2-0 lead with barely a bead of sweat showing - unlike his opponent. However, the tables were turned in the next two games with Paul's experience and determination bringing it back level with all to play for in the fifth. Dan's youthfulness carried him through in the final game to a 9-3 win and the first string chalked up for Ashtead.
The second match to start was the 4th string with our job seeking lawyer Charlie up against seasoned veteran campaigner (sorry Andy!) Andy W. Obviously Charlie's newly found free time has been put to good use on the squash court and after a long tough first game he never looked like coming away with anything other than a 3-0 win which, indeed, was the final result. It was even heard mention that Charlie was "too quick" for his opposition which is not something usually said about him! This gave Ashtead a 2-0 lead.
Next up was yours truely at 2, playing an old adversary in Andy C. With an outstanding display of scintillating boasts and deft touches (God who writes this stuff!) I found myself 2-0 and 8-0 up only to have a little wobble with Andy clawing it back to 6-8 but with one boast too many for Andy, managed to seal the win and victory for Ashtead. His Purley team mates then handed Andy his car keys and he duly left with tail between his legs before the banter in the bar later.
This left the remaining two matches up for grabs and for Purley to go home with some honour left intact. At no. 5 was our Nick (no stranger to winning in the fifth) taking on the spritely Shane (surely your name should be Paul or Andy to make the full house?). Not the prettiest of encounters but played in good spirit and it was no surprise that Nick went 2 down. We have seen this many times before so were not unduly worried but Shane had obviously not read the script he had been handed and went on to inflict an uncommon 3-0 defeat on Nick.
Last match was the number ones with our employed nearly lawyer against a fit looking Paul T. It was obvious after the first rally that this could go on all night. Did I mention scintillating boasts and deft touches earlier on!! - well not much of that in this game! The rallies were long and hard fought with a fit Matt finally living up to his new found number one slot coming away with a 3-0 victory (even winning the final rally with a drop shot - unheard of!) giving Ashtead a well earned 4-1 win overall.
Needless to say, over a beer and food, the chat turned to the return fixture after Christmas and all I can say is, make sure you bring some left over turkey as you will need it to go with the stuffing!!
Nice evening guys and thank you for letting us win.
